I 've seen it in many forums and I think it would wourk pretty good here aswell.
Especially in the Roleplying forums when you need to be notified when there is a post. When you "Follow" a thead you get notification to your e-mail every time there is a new post.
What do you think?

That could possibly be done quite easily. Though I don't know how many email this will generate. Many hosts have a limit of how many emails that can be sent each day/hour. Though I don' think we'll reach that with our little community, yet

There may already be a function for this and I haven't seen it but perhaps a way to avoid sending out too many e-mails is to have a part of your profile that shows where you have recently posted. I would like to see this for those times you reply to a thread that currently doesn't have anyone else on, you leave and then by the time you come back you forget any threads you were on. It might not quite be as good as telling you when you've got a new post in that thread but I would like to see it and thought I should post it in here instead of just making a new thread.

That is an interesting idea! I too would like to be able to track my threads. And doing it this way it won't send billions of emails
I'll look into it!

Yes, it's a good idea, but you won't send billions of e-mails. I suggest that you create a "follow" feature, that only notifies you on RR PM system. This way you will be able to test how many e-mails would actually be sent.

You can use the domain of my RPG club for this, if you're worried about your email traffic

How would we do this? You mark a topic and all those who have marked to follow it will be emailed when a new post has been created. Oh, and also perhaps just once a day as a maximum?

I, too, would really like to see the "Follow" function.
If you limit the emails to one per day (which seems reasonable if you're worried about excess traffic), would it be possible to have it in a digest format; ie. you'd get an email at a certain time of day if any of your followed threads have been added to in the last 24 hours.
This would be really handy for when you're traveling or otherwise deprived of convenient browser access.

Exactly My Lord, you also have the possibility to use RSS, although almost all forums have the option to Follow and Unfollow

Oh, how would a forum RSS work? Would it be one feed for every forum or thread? That could be done.
I will sketch on a follow-feature!

Yeah!!
Let's see if this feature will make our RPG forums more active. I really think it will help once it's done.

I think it hopefully will! I just need to collect my little elven brain cells to get this going

+1
maybe options could include:
- up to once per thread per X hours
- no user can get more than Y emails within X hours even if s/he follows all the threads
- digest summary: up to once per 24 hours, and contain the titles/links of all followed thread that have new posts
- once per thread until next login, but still up to once per X hours. I.e. if a casual visitor follows a very high traffic thread, it will receive a notification the first day but no new notification until her/his next login to RR forums.
- simply info in profile; i.e. threads I follow which have messages since my last check on that thread or (simpler) since my previous login or since I last pressed the "mark all threads read" button.
Just my two cents.
Love this idea. The example I've seen (as suggested above), notifies you when a new post is made in a 'followed thread,' but does not send new emails if more posts are added before you log in again. Example email (with identifying info. removed), is listed below (seems the formatting copied as well...please ignore hyperlinks);

Oh bravo, bravo, bravo, Ionna, for proposing this in the first place! Currently, unless you have recently posted in a thread, it does not show up on the lead RR page. It is so frustrating to want to follow a thread and totally forget where it even IS in forum...drives me crazy!
