This is the thread we all write backgrounds we would like to share with RR!! Come on people, don't be shy! We could use them as reference to future game characters or inspiration for new campaigns! I am sure you all had one character(at least) you will never forget his early years, his ambitions or how he decided to leave his hometown in pursue of a great goal.... I would go first but I need to make some translation...

ok here it goes.. not much of an epic background but quite imaginative... In forgoten realms-Campaign Settings you will find the town described. It all starts in a town named Luthcheq, a quite big and strange town of Chessenta. In Luthcheq anything magical is outlawed and those who rule the town do everything they can to create fear for all aspects of magic. In this town of total madness I lived the first years of my life with my parents. I learnt to live with fear in school as Iearnt to live with secrecy in my quiet house. Nothing would make me suspicious. Up till my nineth birthday when everything changed.... It was the last day of school and I remember it like yesterday, I went back home much earlier being so happy that schools where over. I said "Hi" to mom and headed for my room. Up till that day I thought my mom was a hypochodriac freak, whenever she "cleaned" my room she would never let me in. I never got to invite any friends home because of her madness. I heard her saying that she started cleaning my room but it was too late. I was already in facing a horrible site... He was thin and tall with pointy ears... like the sketches they showed us in school. He was an elf... I couldn't believe my eyes, what is a creature so much related to magic doing in my room? The next second I was rushing to the kitchen screaming and trying to explain my mother what happened. But she already knew... It took hours to my parents to calm me down and explain what was going on. They were trying to oppose the madness of this town, along with other people they believe that magic is not bad and by hiding that elf the were saving him from certain death. After all that they asked me to meet him so that I could see he is not evil... I tried to refuse but all happened too quick... My father pushed inside my room and closed the door saying "Orian, let me introduce you to Luisa". He was sitting on my bed looking very calm... contrary to me... -Nice to meet you Luisa. What happened to your leg? -I... I fel at school... -Oh my... Allow me then..., he started moving towards me, kneeled and by saying something a light appeared in his hands an on my wound. After some seconds it was nearly gone and I was feeling such a warmth inside my body. -How...? -With magic, he smiled -Magic? -Yes. It 's not that scary if you see all the beautiful things that can do. -Like what beautiful things? -Well, let's see, your friend told me that you water him too much. I was so surprised when he pointed at the little cactus plant I had next to bed. -You spoke with my cactus?? -Well there wasn't anyone else to speak to, so... -You know, mom says I shouldn't water it too much, too. -Maybe it talked to her aswell. But it told me secret. -Secret? -It told me that a few days ago you hid a copper piece in the pot. And that was it... You don't need much efford to convince a nine year old that magic has it's pros... We talked and he told me that my parents take a great risk hiding him here and that he should be moving soon.. He didn't want to cause any trouble. But a few minutes later trouble had reached our homes doorway. "There are guards at the door" she said with a trembling voice. "If we run it will turn into a hunt. I have seen it... You will leave from the back door and please take Luisa with you." It all happened in a blink of an eye. I didn't get the chance to say goodbye. We rushed out the back door when at the front I could hear shouts and screams... in minutes we were at the harbour boarding on a ship. And that was the last time I saw Luthcheq. Orian took me to a far land and I became a ranger like him. One day I will definately return and make things straight there. Maybe I will find my parents aswell... Who know what i might find there....

I 've always wanted to create a character with The double wand Wielder feat.....

DOUBLE WAND WIELDER

You can activate two wands at the same time.

Prerequisite: Craft Wand, Two-Weapon Fighting

Benefit: As a full-round action, you can wield a wand in each hand (if you have both hands free), with one wand designated as your primary wand and the other your secondary wand. Each use of the secondary wand expends 2 charges from it instead of 1.

But I never got the chance. Apart from that I get the feeling that it would be very difficult to reach the lvl to have all that power.....

Ioanna, can I use story you posted as start of my own? I like it very much.

I'm planing to built a bard... any suggestions?? The only thing that I m told is that she needs to be in the woods with a seriou case of amnesia...... That should do, since she doesn't remember anything I don't need to write much but still needs some depth into the character... don't you think..?

Ah. Well let's hope you find it. I would like to put one background here but I'm not sure if I can shorten it enough. There's so much cool stuff in his past that I wouldn't want to leave anything out. Besides I'm not sure how I should write it. Should I leave the names out or use them?

Just write it - it's a character background, so it's about substance, not style.

It's probably easier if you leave the names in. They can always be changed afterwards if necessary.

I find the idea of using this thread for getting ideas from other people a great one! I love to think up backgrounds for characters, whether I find them in games, movies, books or art. Now if someone were to toss me a challenge - a character that needs some background - I'd be downright giddy!

HELP NEEDED!! Ok here is the thing I have to write a background. I have already talked with the DM and we know roughly how it would go but I m missing a few big chunks of the story that would make it interesting. Here is what we have so far: The story is about a rogue raised in a big city that joins a guild. We already have five lvls of experience so we can assume that he spent some time in there doing errants making connections and money, maybe gaining a bit of notoriety all in the limits of a neutral- neutral good alignment. At a point where the guild wants to take it to the next lvl, meaning moving from thefts, robberies and black market connections to blackmailing, assasinations and controling the freaking city. So let's say that I was asked to kidnap a little girl( a judge's daughter) in order to blackmail him and change the outcome of a trial. I kidnapped her and I kept her in a safe place till the trial. With orders to kill if something went wrong (alignment conflict), how would I end up betraying the guild and become a city's hero??? Lot of ideas hit the table but I don't know how to make a connection... Maybe she reminded me of a sibling and I just couldn't do it. And maybe my comrades in the guild realised that I wasn't cut for the job so I found out that I would be given to the authorites with all the blame of a killed child, so I decided to double cross them. I don't know.... any ideas???

Maybe the girl was quite clever and she talked you about things making you realize how wrong everything you had been doing for the guild was and that they had brainwashed you. Or maybe (depending on her age) you fell in love with her. The traditional Stockholm syndrome the other way around. Or maybe both?

Yeah maybe she overheard something from another rogue, told me, and I realised I was being trapped. I like her being young and clever, in fact I just got an idea. In Greek TV there is an old series in which a young girl being shy she always talks throught her rag doll. Always saying "Patatina told she does not like that man..." and things like that. So maybe she did the same.

I would say that she has not heard anything but she tells her own opinion why the things the rogue had been doing were wrong, and she has very good arguments for her age. Just a little push that makes him think.

The problem with this background is that *no* single character can double-cross any thieves guild worth their salt, not even the guildmaster, unless has an even higher supporter, e.g. someone in the city council. (Just reminds me of Athkatla, as described in Volo's guide to XXX... the one that describes Amn, Tethyr and another country, can't recall) Once I had a thief who had to abandon the guild and he did it straight from prison, thanks to some secret benefactor whom he believed to be his father he'd never had the chance to meet. Maybe your rogue was convinced by a reliable benefactor to let herself (himself? couldn't find reference to gender) be captured just as the guild planned, though the girl was put into safety in time. Then s/he escaped from prison with some major support, officially became wanted, but word gradually spreaded along the grapevine stating that the wanted rogue actually supported the rescue team to find the girl unharmed. In other words, s/he became a (positive) legend instead of city hero.

Ioanna, I recommend you let the kid be a kid. And what do kids do? They ask questions; naive, ignorant, wonderful questions driven not by prejudice but by pure curiosity. Many of these questions are ones adults should ask themselves, for they can put things into new perspective.

City guard follows orders. You may leave it as a loose end, i.e. city guard supported the rogue and the girl in the escape, or even held up some members of the thieves' guild, but there must have been someone high on power that made it possible. (and then again, there may be another hidden plot, e.g. the guildmaster *planned* this all along and he *wanted* the guild (eh, part of it) to fall. I'm quitting right now, since I feel like getting to the level of cris-crossing the plots similar to Whole Nine Yards and similar movies
