There are a lot of interesting projects already, but most are started by people who clearly can't make the game they say they will make, because they have no experience. Obsidian has.

Indeed so. I was a bit surprised that they launched a project through Kickstarter. They would definitely have the means to develop a game by themselves economically.

Hello again folks ! I was just dropping by to say that i recently bought Guild Wars 2 and i must admit that
i've been and i will be playing this game for a looooong long time. This game, (no i don't even dare to call it game, cuz it's more then that) is just insanly well crafted. GW 2 is not just only the greatest mmorpg that eclipses all recect activity in the genre and shocks with it's complex story, characters, gameplay and world development etc,but with it's professionalism and beauty as well. I've been playing alot of WoW in the past, also tons of freetoplay mmorpgs, but nothing can compare to GW 2. Maybe Tera Online would be a worthy opponent, but i know this is not a race ! Honestly, i was not very delighted about the first GW and when i heard that ArenaNet is in the process of creating a sequel...well let's say i wasn't expecting that much of a perfection there. The first GW does not impress me that much, although i follow the lore and respect what they've done. It was like what...7 years ago when the game came out ? 2004 or 2005 if i'm not mistaken. It was not that long ago, cuz World of Warcraft was first released around the same period and people have't lost interest...yet. Even i thought about starting again playing it with the new "Panda" expansion, but some changes are for the better ! On the other hand the main thing about GW 2 is that every aspect of this game screams perfection !! And not to mention the godlike soundscapes by Sir Jeremy Soule. (I'm surprised that he is even taking part of the new MOP soundtrack as well) I'll stop here 'cuz i wanna talk about something else.
It's about the free to play and pay to win game model and how does it fit in the industry.
The pay to win and monthy fee model prolly will vanish soon enough, cause' the new ftp model is wiping out most of the old concepts around mmorpgs these days. I don't really prefer WoW or SWTOR or The Secret World or any other big name to be free to play and i'm definitely shure that Blizz or Bioware or EA will not bow down to any of this, but i have my hopes for some of them. Also i'm amazed that ArenaNet haven't done the same thing with GW 2 and that is what it makes it unique. Unique, because it's probably the only mmorpg that you buy once and can play as long as your heart beats. You are finally free from the slavery! , and not scatter surplus tons of cash for mothly fees, just to be able to play ur fav game and to participate in raids with friends and what not. That's what i think for the moment. More will come on this topic. Sorry if this is not the right place to point my opinion (Elrond correct me if i'm wrong). Btw if any 1 is interested in the topic, just follow these guys:

They discuss alot of what i said here.
Keep watching and keep owning !! We'll meet on the servers !
For the Charr !!

As a studio that made many games, they still don't have money to produce another one, as most of the money takes the 'producer' and 'distributor', where producer is not the guy that actually produce, but the company that funds the project. Kickstarter let's them create a game with their own money - in the sense they're not limited by money-givers ("Don't create a 2D game, no one will play that!", "Don't release the game on Linux, people using that OS don't like to buy!", etc.)

You are absolutely right! That way they aren't forced to do yet another FPS or other. And they will know beforehand if there is interest enough. And if they do, they also have the money for it. Perhaps this is the way to go for ALL projects in the future?

Take a look at Steve Jackson Games' Kickstarter for Ogre. SJ Games has been profitable for 30 years, but when Steve wanted to make a "Designer's Edition" of his first game, he knew it would take more capital than was available just from company profits. And, as Elrond says, it does show what the interest in the game is.
So using Kickstarter by an existing game company to fund/gauge interest in a game seems quite reasonable to me.

I think Morrowind will be remade with a Skyrim-like graphics soon. The title was somethin like "Skywind" if i heard correctly.
Look for more news and stuff here:
