I have to admit, that I never saw anything of the Mystara-setting until now.

It's the "original" setting for D&D. It was re-released for AD&D 2e at about the same time as Birthright came out, if memory serves.

Mystara - like Greyhawk - shows the signs of adventure-oriented world building: adventure locations came first, and geography and society was only added in afterwards. They weren't going for realism, depth, or the favour of reviewers, just for a place for them and their friends to have fun exploring one dungeon at a time. Gotta love the pragmatism of the thing!

Birthright, eh? No wonder I didn't spot it. That was the time I had more difficulties about keeping track of my whereabouts than finding new settings to play with. I was quite involved with a Forgotten Realms group and was fiddling around with Dark Sun and Ravenloft.
