Does anybody remember Hero Quest? It is one of my favorite games. I like it because it is fairly simple to play, especially for those people who are not really into the whole fantasy rpg board games. I want to start playing D&D, but sadly, there are not alot of people I know that would venture into that world with me.

I've never played it but I remember the advertisement on TV when I was about five...

It scared the hell out of me....

The first D&D games I played was with the figures of an old Hero Quest.

I have a whip of banning (+3magic) and I 'm not afraid to use it!

That was the 2nd RPG-ish game I played, when I was 8 or so. Only once on vaction with friends of my parents and their kids, but it was fun. The first one I played was The Sorcerer's Cave, which had random dungeons and you can recruit monsters to your party. It also had lots of magic items like Munchkin.

Yes! I have this and the expansions from when I was 12. When I met my husband, he had a copy too! We bought a mint copy off eBay to paint up nicely as the sets we picked up as kids were a bit messy. HeroQuest was the start of the slippery slope into a lifetime Games Workshop obsession. Our house is FULL of little models now!!

Such memories! I think I still have the box for the game. Can't exactly guarantee that everything's in it, though. I think I lost most of the miniatures when I was moving house.

My uncle bought it for my birthday when I was 9 or 10 or something. I played it way too much I think I still have it buried somewhere in my parents' resort house, next to my NES console.

Oh yes, I still have my old copy, and run it occasionally. I've taken it to gaming events directed toward children of all ages, and it's been a hit every time!

Has anyone made extended use of the Revised Edition? It looks good, at least on paper. I've dabbled with it a bit, but not enough to have the full picture.

Hero Quest will always have a special place in my heart. It's what me and my friends used as the basis for our very first homebrew game systems.

And to complicate things further, there's the completely unrelated HeroQuest roleplaying game system by Robin D. Laws and Greg Stafford. And, so we don't run out of Quests, this HeroQuest replaced RuneQuest as the primary system for Glorantha (a good call, I think).

As much as I would love a new edition of the game, I understand the project is dead in the water (if not completely sunk) due to an intellectual property dispute. "HeroQuest" was trademarked by Greg Stafford for his roleplaying game of the same name before Milton Bradley published their famous board game. The board game was set in Games Workshop's 'Old World', and they designed it. so they have a claim to it as well (also published Advanced Hero Quest later on without Milton Bradley). Now, many of us are aware of the stink GW raised about the term "space marine", which they have trademarked. This was largely due to the importance of brand strength in American trademark practices (i.e. if you let someone use it once, the strength of your claim goes down considerably), from which GW suffered badly when they didn't enforce their trademark when Blizzard churned out Starcraft - effectively an RTS set in Warhammer 40k - and made huge profits. Games Workshop is now an aging company living on inertia and aggressive lawyers. They're losing market share with every indie miniatures game that comes out, and are largely dependent on owning intellectual property. Milton Bradley is owned by Hasbro. Need I say more? Moon Design, the indie RPG company that has an exclusive license to Greg Stafford's original trademark, was willing to afford the HQ 25th Anniversary Edition rights to the name in return for a fee and proof that the makers had permission from Milton Bradley and Games Workshop as well. The newcomers failed to produce the latter, so Moon Design basically did them a favour by closing down their Kickstarter before the GW and Hasbro attack lawyers were set loose. TL;DR: project cancelled due to stupidity.

I have considerable problems (mostly due to EBay prices & general availability) to get myself the Hero Quest expansion sets: - 'Kellar's Keep' - 'Return of the Witch Lord' - 'The Frozen Horror' - 'The Mage of the Mirror' As well as the 'HeroQuest: Adventure Design Kit' and the 'Hero Quest Master Edition'. I'm also looking for a Space Crusade and the expansions 'Mission Dreadnought', 'Eldar Attack' and the White Dwarf Issues #134 (1991) & #145 (1992). Can anyone give me a hint, where I could get these items for a reasonable (not collectors) price?

Realistically nowhere, I'm afraid. They're all collector's items now, especially Space Crusade.

Of course if you're not dead set on spending money on these products, and are prepared to prep the cardboard pieces yourself, the Internet provides. I've managed to find all the Hero Quest expansions on the web. In fact, if you check out boardgamegeek.com you'll probably find fan-made high-resolution templates for all the pieces in those boxes.

boardgamegeek.com is a very, very good site for to look up almost all kinds of board- & cardgames. I think I'll be visiting this site quite regularly now. Thank you very much.
