What a great question. I will be re-reading this thread to see what others have posted about theirs, but since I have only a moment I figured I would mention something about mine. A quiz of sorts. The little white dot in the brown 'beam'. Can you guess what it may be?

To me, it looks like a picture of the moon but there is a hair in the middle of the lens. Or perhaps it is a star or a planet? It kind of reminds me of old Hubble photographs.

Mine is not pretty, nor is it immediately interesting. But once revealed, it is very deep and humbling. The white dot. Focus on it for moment. Think of what it could be.

Let me guess. Your avatar is part of a photo called "Pale Blue Dot" taken by Voyager I? Then the white dot is our lovely homeworld, Earth.

Mine is some stinkin' ol' goblin, who usually roamed the woods around Isengard. Apart from that, i think he is some kind of a noble between the tribes. Also he is s clever one. Although, he's not your typical greenskin dude with pointy ears. This guy is somehow important. He also wears a noble name. Deal with it !

Whoooo!!! We have a winner! That is exactly where it is from. NASA, based upon a suggestion from Carl Sagan, had one of the Voyager spacecraft turn around and snap a picture of home for us. Way outside the orbit of Uranus.

Makes me feel small.

Nice, I didn't win anything during my entire life.

There are some really amazing avatars in this group. Mine is simply a smaller version of a picture I really liked which also matched my username (Silmay is a phonetic spelling of Silme, or moonlight in the Elvish tongue).

As a side note, despite all things related to the moon etc,. being masculine in Tolkiens world, it's really hard to find a remotely masculine picture for moonlight.

That'd be my guess; although I'm not familiar with the character depicted. I just liked the shot and thought it worked well as an avatar.

Yeah, to be honest, it's a cool avatar. As long as it had meaning to you personally, then it is worth having it in the first place.

Thanks. I agree an avatar should have some meaning to the user.

Mine is a "spider-skull" brand logo cropped from a photo I took of my AR-15. The company is "Spikes Tactical" http://www.spikestactical.com/new/z/index.php - No intention of promoting anything...I just think it looks cool! On the chance that this "freaks anyone out"... Please know that I am a completely non-violent "hobby shooter"... I have been for 25 years. I'm not a "prepper", not a "gun freak," not a paranoid-psycho child of the devil... I don't even like to hunt. Just a normal guy that likes to plink away at targets once in awhile. I also like Archery a great deal. Needless to say Legolas is one of my favorite characters in LoTR -T
