I want this forum to be just about dwarves. You can post comments...questions...anything really. We can talk about the mythology behind dwarves...who our favorite literary dwarves are...anything. I just love discussing dwarves. I know if I lived in a fantasy world, I would be a dwarf. I am a relatively short, stocky human male in real life so I could see myself just being a dwarf with giantism.

Only feminists. You don't see the other, as they stay in kitchen.

Nice comments everyone. In some books I have read like Markus Heitz "The Dwarves", they have whispy down on their faces instead of a full-fledged beard.

In the lore for World of Warcraft, they say that most dwarven women have beards and that it's considered beautiful in their culture.... yet dwarven women in game are all beardless. So I guess that means that all the dwarven women in game are frightfully ugly.

Well it all depends on a clan. I imagine all women could have beards in a communist clan, but I don't know one. Maybe the myth is all about petty-dwarves... Real dwarf women stay in home, real dwarf men don't talk about inside of their clan outside it, and no human would be let to see it.

Hmmm...are there any Dwarf Magicians? You don't usually hear about dwarves who can use magic in fantasy worlds. Or at least I don't haha.

Dwarves are engineers, they like science, logic and technical blueprints. Magic is something quite different. It's mystical, often unpredictable, irrational and breaking scientific laws. That's why most dwarves have only two extremely opposite counterarguments for magic: one is laugh and other an axe. Well, there is another, but it's only a slight variation of the second, as it's a hammer.

Still, magic managed to make it's place in some clans:

- through forges - dwarven blacksmiths couldn't be worse then elven ones, and enchanting helped

- through ancient history of their clans, artifacts giving magical power etc.

- through magical resources like ether or lyrium

Most popular are runes, that is carving words of great power into stone or metal; sometimes these are the words that give their user magical power, and sometimes grooves only purpose is holding magical substance (like ether) inside it, and they form different symbols only to describe the effect of a substance used.

I thing I know a female character dwarf who is a wizard, she was also evil.... I think it's written in the Forgoten Realms-Campaign settings... Yeah, I remember the artwork, she was rather looking just like the bartender in "Cuervo" a Metal Bar..... hahahhaaaa.... She looks just like him

That's something that depends on the fantasy world you're looking at -- in Dragon Age, dwarves can't use magic because dwarves don't go to the Fade when they sleep, but that makes them excellent enchanters (which, is sort of magic use, I guess?) but in a lot of fantasy worlds (Warcraft, Forgotten Realms, Warhammer) it depends on the culture of the clan/subrace whether or not dwarves can or are willing to use magic. I think dwarves in Tolkeins universe can't use magic, but I'm not sure it ever actually says anywhere?

They use the rings.

As in the Dwarves series by Markus Heitz, most dwarves are scared or troubled by magic. Most tend to shy away from any contact or association with magic or magical beings. However, some do use it, but the hard-headed-ness of dwarves make it more difficult for them to learn. It takes a lot of reading and not a lot of doing.

The rings didn't have a lot of effect on the dwarves -- in fact, according to the LOTR wiki, the dwarves weren't even able to turn invisible with their rings. All that happened was that the greed they already had was heightened.

I guess that pretty much implies that dwarves wouldn't be able to use magic, at least not properly. :\

That's interesting.

If there was a negative magic effect, then there was the effect, wasn't there?
