Haven't read too many books, but so far I must say the Forgotten Realms Dark Elf Trilogy and Icewind Dale Trilogy by R. A. Salvatore.

Aren't these books based on games? I've read one book based on game, guessing from polish title, the original one was "Baldur's Gate" by... I don't remember. It wasn't bad, like, let's say... Amateur fantasy, written by guys like me, or even worse, that You can find in polish magazine Fantastyka, but I think it was still bad. If the books You mention are as bad, then You probably are yet to be excited by how good books can be, that is, don't stop reading .
I can recommend the Hitchiker Guide to the Galaxy. I've saw two people recommend it recently (and one was here, Ioanna, I believe), then I started reading it, and it's great. Well, it all depends on preferences, but you can guess the preferences of a guy with 'ether' in his nicname.

One of best fantasy series are Malloreon by David Eddings, and The Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski
Oh that's easy. The City of Dreaming Books.
Not the greatest story I know, but it uses the medium of the novel just excelently. It's a novel about novels, and absolutely hilarious.

Oh, that sound awesome, I'm certainly going to read that one!

I've seen some awesome suggestions here. I'm new here, but I'd also like to add my favorite author, David Eddings. The Belgariad series and The Mallorean series are two of my favorites. However, most of his writings are very good. But, if you want something a little obscure, check out Neil Gaiman's works. The Sandman graphic novels are great, but his novels are very... thought provoking, to say the least. Neverwhere and Good Omens are the top two in my opinion. Luck!

I am always in the middle of a book, but I never seem to make a dent in the mountain of books I have yet to read...
Here are some of my favorites:
Abhorsen/ Old Kingdom Trilogy - Garth Nix
House of Leaves - Mark Danielewski (I cannot express how awesome this book is!)
Anything by H.P. Lovecraft!
Xanth (a series of about 32 books) - Piers Anthony (awesome for its hilarious and often groan-worthy puns)
LotR/ The Hobbit - Tolkien (of course!)
Song of Ice and Fire - George RR Martin
Harry Potter - JK Rowling
His Dark Materials Trilogy - Philip Pullman
Great Alta Saga and The Pit Dragon Trilogy - Jane Yolen
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
I have a soft spot for children's fantasy, so I haven't devoured some the more adult series yet. Some of the authors I have amassed to read soon are Jean M Auel, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, Ursula Leguin, Anne McAffery, etc.

Good to hear! A word of warning, though: the book's formatting will get downright insane and confusing, and there is some pretty foul language in it. It is a great horror book, I had so much fun reading it.
You might get some strange looks when you are holding the book sideways or upside down just to read it. ^_^

I don't think that there is a semblance between the two. However, Silmarillion is not an easy book and most of the people find it boring, because they cannot appreciate its linguistic wealth and are not able to read a book that doesn't have the fast bestseller-like way of writing. The Silmarillion is the cosmology of Tolkien's universe and simultaneously it is a drama and an epic tale. It has a coherent plot and it is not a big appendix as some may think.

I wrote a long, bright counterargument to that. Unfortunately searching for "cosmology" deleted it, so I'm willing to agree.
