All MMOs are grind fests I am told. But LOTRO offers many other options too. I enjoy their music system, not only do they have great in game music but you can create your own music and play it individually or with a group in game. I am also a roleplayer and if you get on the unofficial roleplay server (US - Landroval) there are many people to roleplay with, some even know their Tolkien!

I love how the Google ads for this thread dutifully serves up a LOTRO advert to go with the commentary.

I love this game. I play alot (probably to much.)

I bought six months when it came out but never really played it. It still felt a little beta in the beginning. But I've heard it matured pretty much?
Friggin Lord Elrond!
It really has matured. Very solid game, and it's even more fun if you've read the series
. Also, the music is awesome, and there is a very good user-generated music system.
So much so in fact, that on the Landroval server there's a big music festival called Weatherstock (on the summit of Amon Sul, Weathertop, of course
) held in mid-June, and players play in bands and whatnot. Very cool if you haven't checked it out yet!

Haha, sounds really fun! I love player-organized events!
Friggin Lord Elrond!
This last "Weatherstock" there were over 600 people with 12 bands and lots of LAG. This is a great player run event but it's not the only one. There are horse races, poetry tale and music events, concerts, organized roleplay etc. LOTS of fun and great people.

Haha that sounds really fun! The thing with WoW is that it's pretty dead from RP-events. People just roam around and kill things, even on the RP-server. Pretty dull.
Friggin Lord Elrond!
That sounded fun, I wish I would have known about that earlier, I would've blew the dust off my Rune Keeper and took the short road there from Isengard; my dwarf loves a good party

Have they made it possible to play the bad guys for real? That was a thing I thought was a little odd in the beginning, that there were no much of a player-played "other side".
Friggin Lord Elrond!
Not as fully as in, say, WoW. But there is monster play, in which you can play many types of baddies (creeps). It's a lot of fun >..here's a link to a basic guide:

I don't have a computer to run LOTRO or I would absolutely play it. It sounds amazing, and I love the idea of being other adventurers out in the world while LOTR is going on.
Alas, my "good" computer is a Macbook and I don't think there's a LOTRO version for Macs.

However there are alternate OS for macs, run a windows emulator, a friend ran DDO on the last version of the mac OS. Sadly his new mac had the latest mac os and there wasn't/isn't an emulator for it yet. And you still have to buy a windows license. So he bouught a laptop instead.
i play lotro on the eng-rp server
